Teen Killed by Lightning while Skiing on Lake Click here for related story Man Killed by Lightning Strike Laid to Rest Wednesday (WIS 10) July
5, 2008 Joanne Bitner, who works at Mill Creek Marina on Lake Marion said that she had seen Moore on a jet ski, nearing the open water. Moore had been holding on to the railing of a pontoon boat when the boat's antenna was hit by lightning. Bitner says that lightning traveled down the boat to the handrail. The teen was thrown off his jet ski. "It was a real bright flash and a loud pop and after that we kind of knew what was happening," says family friend Jonathan Smith, who was on the boat at the time. "That's when we jumped and pulled him up, and he was very lifeless. His eyes looked dark and I didn't think there was much hope for him," he adds. Bitner then says that people on the boat rushed to get Moore on the pontoon and back to the landing as quick as possible, to call 911. Luckily, Bitner says that an EMT worker was staying at the campground at the time of the incident. Bitner says that the EMT helped the teen until the ambulance and other emergency workers arrived. Lt. Robert McCollough with the state's Department of Natural Resources says that DNR officers were called out to the lake to assist with this accident. Lt. McCollough says that when DNR officials arrived at the scene, Moore was still alive but later died at the hospital. "The mood yesterday afternoon and today has been pretty quiet, things aren't as normal. A lot of people are sad from what happened," says fellow boater Robin Martin, who also gave Moore CPR. Family says Moore was a happy young man, who loved farming with his grandfather and racing go-karts.
