Children Playing in Park Struck by Lightning

June 25, 2008

Douglas, Arizona- Two children, a brother and sister were taken to a hospital after they were struck by lightning while playing in the 3rd Streetl park. A huge bolt of lighting struck a tree where the children were playing nearby. Their mother was standing nearby and witnessed the two children fall to the ground. She immediately called 911 for help.

Antonio Martines who lives across the street from the park said,"lighting, one real hard one, never seen one like that it was a ball of fire."

A fast moving thunderstorm with heavy rain and wind, and a significant amount of lightning blew into the Douglas area and caught many people by surprise.

The Douglas Fire Department responded to the scene within minutes. Paramedic Joey Alvarez said that the children were conscious and treated for lighting strike injuries.

The seven-year-old girl and her nine-year-old brother were taken to the Southeastern Health Center for treatment. After the storm subsided they were airlifted to a hospital in Phoenix. No updates have been reported.
